One of my recent favorite resources is a book I'm reading with the kids at night. It is called "The Jesus Story Bible." It is a kids Bible with stories told through the artistry of writer Sally Lloyd Jones (no relation to Martin, don't worry, I already checked) and superbly illustrated by Jago. The subtitle of the Story Bible says "Every story whispers his name."
I like this idea of every story in the Bible and in our lives whispering the name of God so much that I based my last sermon at River Rock Church on this. (http://www.riverrockchurch.org/rrc4/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=136&Itemid=42)
Tonight we read the story of David and Goliath. This is a sure find in every kids Bible. Tonight the words jumped off the page. In response to Goliath's taunts, David says "It isn't how strong you are or how many swords and spears you have that will save you-it is God who saves you! This is God's battle. And God always wins His battles!"
I can't think of a better perspective on our new challenge in Holland. It is so tempting to want to rely on just about anything but God. My hope for us in Holland and for Chuck at River Rock that we would not rely on great ideas, good books, talents, leadership abilities or communication gifts,.....that we would not think that our success depends on "how strong you are" but on a God who saves.
